Ellen Cooper – Painting the Portrait - Intensive Workshop
At Heron Crest Studios July 09 – 14, 2017
Description of workshop: This workshop is designed to provide a solid foundation in the process of painting a portrait from the model from start to finish. Topics covered are the tonal study/grisaille, accuracy of proportions and drawing, achieving a likeness and facial expression, creating form and dimension in the light, improving observational skills to see color and value relationships. We will also address the pose, lighting, background and composition. Demos will include how to organize and use the palette of colors and how to mix luminous flesh tones.
Five days of 6 hours per day painting from two models, one model and one pose for the morning session, second model and one pose for the afternoon session. Demo, time for discussion and question and answer. One-on-one feedback at your easel.
There is no wheelchair access at this facility – no elevator or lift.
Dates: July 09-14. 2016
Hours: July 09: Sunday evening demo 6:30-9:30 PM.
July 10-14: 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM with 1-hour lunch between morning and afternoon painting sessions.
Open to: 9 students on a first come-first served basis.
Workshop Fee: $850. (Model fee included) Payment can be made online through the website www.ellencooper.net or by check. Checks should be made out to “Ellen Cooper” and mailed to Ellen Cooper, P.O. Box 1477, Media, PA 19063.
Workshop payment and refund policy: Due to limited class space tuition is non-refundable. Registration and enrollment is first come-first served with full tuition due at time of registration (Exceptions made in non-refundable policy for family emergencies).
All levels welcome: for a more satisfying workshop experience, drawing experience is highly recommended. Some experience with oils is useful. Please contact instructor if you plan to work in a medium other than oil.
Description of the workshop space and facilities at Heron Crest Studios:
•2nd floor of recently renovated 19th cotton mill along Chester Creek in Aston, PA
•7 miles from I-95; 15 minutes to Media; 20 minutes to West Chester and the Brandywine Valley region and Wyeth County; 30 minutes to Philadelphia, PA and Wilmington, DE
•easels, taborets, chairs, clean up facilities provided
•three bathrooms and two clean-up sinks
•lunch room with coffee pot
•whole building AC and heat
•primary access is a covered outdoor metal staircase with railings on both sides
•a secondary fire exit, which is an indoor staircase, with a railing on one side
